Selecting the Right POP Display for Your Needs

What are POP displays? POP displays, also known as Point of Purchase displays, are product merchandisers that are customized to promote a particular brand or product in a retail setting. While these displays can serve various purposes, they are a critical component of any retail environment.

POP displays are often used as a way to stand out from competitors, grab a customer’s attention, and convince that customer to buy the item. It’s important that POP displays are creative and unique so they are as effective as possible.

The three main types of POP displays include temporary, semi-permanent, and permanent. Each of these display types have unique characteristics to benefit your business. Let’s take a look at the differences between these three types of displays:

Temporary POP Displays

Great for seasonal products, items that are being tested, new products, or short-term promotions, temporary POP displays are usually constructed quickly and are meant to last only a few weeks or a few months.

Because these displays are only used for a short period of time, it’s common that they are made out of inexpensive materials such as recycled cardboard.

Semi-Permanent POP Displays

Meant to last from a few months to a year, semi-permanent POP displays allow retailers to display items for a longer period of time without committing to a permanent structure installment. Generally, this type of display is used for doing brand promotions, displaying multiple products from the same brand at once, or supporting a certain design feature that a retail store wants to have.

Much like temporary POP displays, the semi-permanent variety may include smaller cardboard displays in conjunction with sturdier freestanding display meant to hold up over time.

Permanent POP Displays

Permanent POP displays are often used to make it look like there is a specific area within a retail store for a long period of time, usually anywhere from one to three years. These displays are mainly used by well-established brands because they can require high upfront costs and have high maintenance fees.

Popular Use Cases for POP Displays

Retailers spend a huge portion of their budget on marketing, and POP displays are a critical component of that.

Floor stands are popular and often placed in the aisles of stores to bring attention to a specific promotional product. These stands will grab a shopper’s attention to convince them to buy a new, seasonal, or sale item. It’s critical for retailers to move products efficiently, so subtle ways of getting customers to buy products and take them off the shelf in a timely manner are actually very well-thought-out strategies.

There’s no size discrimination when it comes to POP displays, either. You may use POP displays on a large scale that tower over consumers, or you could design a small scale POP display such as counter displays in the checkout lane.

Making the Right Decision for Your Business

As we mentioned, POP displays should be part of your marketing strategy. Consider what products are most important to move and focus on creating displays around those products. You should consider factors such as cost, the products, the target audience, and the timeline of the POP displays.

All these factors must be considered together or your POP displays will not be very effective. For example, if you decide to have a semi-permanent POP display of a popular children’s toy, but the display is situated up high, you’re going to have a problem: children, your target audience, will not be able to see the products displayed!
